When I was much younger, I gleaned some of my first political insights from books by Tom Edsall, then a reporter from The Washington Post, like The New Politics of Inequality, 1984, Chain Reaction, with Mary Edsall, 1991. More recently he’s been a source of frustration because whatever the politics of the moment, the overriding message always seems to be same: things are bad for the Democrats and about to get worse. But he’s always worth your time to read because of his insights and knowledge, whatever annoyance may come along with it. This new column in the Times is a good example.
