During a particularly entertaining exchange between Republican members of the House Oversight Committee and Michael Cohen, the President’s former lawyer revealed a glimmer of a sense of humor.
When he was called a “pathological liar” by Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Cohen interrupted.
“Sir, I’m sorry, are you referring to me or the President?” he said with a smirk before getting scolded by Gosar: “Hey this is my time!”
“Now are you familiar with Rule 35 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedures?” Gosar continued, referencing the deal that Cohen has reached with the government– cooperation in exchange for a possible reduced sentence.
“I am now,” Cohen retorted.
“Oh!” Gosar exclaimed. “So the committee understands that you’ve been in contact with the Southern District of New York, is that true?”
Cohen responded that he is in “constant contact” with the SDNY “regarding ongoing investigations.” When asked whether it was in order to reduce his sentence, Cohen denied that assertion.
“Yes it is, the answer is yes,” Gosar retorted, shouting over Cohen’s attempts to say “it’s not.” Gosar continued, alleging Cohen committed crimes to protect himself, not Donald Trump, citing the “women who love and support Michael Cohen” as an example of an advantage for Cohen.
