2020 Democratic candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) on Monday put Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on blast in an email vowing to appoint a former public school teacher to lead the Education department if she were to win the presidency.
“I’ll just be blunt: Betsy DeVos is the worst Secretary of Education we’ve seen,” Warren wrote. “She and her team are up to their eyeballs in conflicts of interest. Instead of championing our students, they protect for-profit colleges that break the law and cheat them.”
“So I’m making this pledge to you: In my administration, the Secretary of Education will be a former public school teacher who is committed to public education,” she continued.
Warren has made education a cornerstone of her campaign, unrolling a major policy proposal last month that would wipe out student debt and make public universities free for all.
DeVos has faced major criticism over her handling of student civil rights, loan forgiveness, rape allegations on campus, predatory for-profit institutions and funding for the Special Olympics.
However, the Education secretary insists “it’s not” all about her and that she’d really rather not have us media folk use her name as “clickbait,” thank you!
