FILE - In this June. 12, 2018, file photo, U.S. President Donald Trump, right, meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island, in Singapore. North Korea says it will never unilaterally give up its nuclear weapons unless the United States removes its nuclear threat first. The statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, comes amid a deadlock in nuclear negotiations between the United States and North Korea. President Donald Trump has often talked about his close relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Now, his administration seems to be working to push the relationship along, as it considers opening a liaison office in North Korea, and letting the Koreans open one in America.

According to a Monday Wall Street Journal report, the two countries are still miles apart on denuclearization, no matter Trump’s personal affinity for Kim.

A liaison office was floated during the Clinton administration, but the plan fell apart when the North Koreans wouldn’t let the U.S. diplomat bring in any documents without inspection.
