The Republican Party, which has been swallowed whole by President Donald Trump, supposedly won’t immediately throw its lot behind the ex-president if he decides to run again in 2024, Republican National Committee (RNC) chair Ronna McDaniel insisted on Wednesday.

McDaniel told the Associated Press that the GOP “has to stay neutral.”

“I’m not telling anybody to run or not to run in 2024,” she said. “That’s going to be up to those candidates going forward.”

However, McDaniel acknowledged the former president still has a “huge, huge presence” with his base.

Trump’s enduring grip on the GOP became immediately obvious in the days following his departure from the White House, with multiple state Republican chapters trumpeting their allegiance to their former leader.

The GOP’s unwavering loyalty to Trump was thrown into sharp relief at the party’s national convention, where the GOP decided it would have literally no platform in 2020, declaring it would simply “enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda.”
