Senior White House aides reportedly scrambled to convince President Donald Trump to take down his retweet of a video in which one of his supporters yelled “White power!” on Sunday.
NBC News reported on Monday night that White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law,” and other top officials unsuccessfully tried to contact Trump for hours about the post.
However, the President reportedly could not be reached because he was out golfing and had not taken his phone with him.
As a result, the post stayed up for over three hours before his aides persuaded him to take it down. According to both NBC News and the Washington Post, Trump was mostly moved to do so due to Sen. Tim Scott’s public condemnation of the post.
During a press briefing on Monday, McEnany claimed that Trump hadn’t heard the supporter’s “white power!” shout in the video.
