Ex-President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking revenge against House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) after she explicitly called him out for sparking a violent insurrection at the Capitol and then voted for his impeachment.
According to CNN, Trump has been repeatedly asking his GOP loyalists about both kicking her out of party leadership and getting her primaried.
The former president is also pushing them to publicly discuss Cheney’s allegedly poor approval numbers in a poll by his Save America PAC, CNN reports.
Cheney has been besieged with Republicans’ calls to resign her chairmanship ever since she announced her support for impeaching Trump a week after the insurrection, with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) leading the charge for her removal.
Though he defended Cheney at first, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has begun to distance himself from his fellow House party leader.
“Look, I support her, but I also have concerns,” he told talk show host Greta Van Susteren last week.
Meanwhile, McCarthy has begun crawling back to Trump after initially admitting the ex-president “bears responsibility” for the Capitol siege by a mob of Trump supporters that caused five deaths.
On Thursday, McCarthy visited Trump at Mar-a-Lago to have a “very good and cordial” discussion about “taking back the House in 2022,” according a statement by Trump’s PAC.
