President Donald Trump is setting the groundwork for the Space Force to be the first new branch of the military since 1947, though it will be housed under the umbrella of the Air Force.

According to a Monday Politico report, it will cost less than $100 million to start and its four-star general leader will sit on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Its top civilian will be “a new undersecretary for space.”

Congress will ultimately have the biggest say in green-lighting and molding the new branch.
