President Trump told reporters Friday that he doesn’t think he should tone down his rhetoric about journalists and the media in the wake of the arrest of a Coast Guard lieutenant who planned to attack Democratic lawmakers and journalists.

When asked about the arrest, Trump said it was a “shame” and “very sad when a thing like that happens,” referencing the man’s planned attack.

A reporter then asked if Trump felt the need to monitor his language — like referring to reporters as the “enemy of the people — and he said no.

“I think my language is very nice,” he said.

Trump had not previously commented on arrest of the lieutenant, who is an avowed white nationalist, but told reporters he was getting a full briefing on the case later on Friday.
