In the dwindling days of his presidency, President Donald Trump has been discussing the possibility of leaving the GOP behind him to start a new political party, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Trump has reportedly proposed calling it the “Patriot Party.”
The soon-to-be former President’s musings reflect his anger at Republicans whom he feels did not sufficiently defend him as he attempted to overturn the election with falsehoods about voter fraud.
The Republican Party has been kept under Trump’s tight grip even after he encouraged his supporters to mob the Capitol in a deadly siege that caused five deaths: A new Quinnipiac poll shows that 80 percent of Republicans do not believe the President was responsible for the attack.
The White House and Republican National Committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
