President Trump kicked off his week bright and early Monday morning by ridiculing former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) over an affair he had with an Argentinian woman.
The Twitter lashing was likely triggered by Trump’s cable news consumption. Just minutes after the former Republican governor appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday, the President started tweeting about Sanford, who recently announced his intention to run against Trump in 2020.
In the tweets, Trump raised an embarrassing past political saga involving Sanford. In 2009, Sanford disappeared for several days while meeting up with an Argentinian woman he was having an affair with. Sanford returned to the U.S. and gave an emotional interview admitting to the affair. Sanford’s staff and wife were reportedly unaware of his whereabouts and his staff told reporters at the time that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Trump now has three GOP challengers in 2020: Sanford, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld and former Illinois Republican lawmaker Joe Walsh.
