President Trump is apparently under the impression that homelessness in the United States is a new “phenomenon.”
During an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, whom he invited to tag along to North Korea instead of his national security adviser, Carlson asked Trump how he felt about how clean the cities in Japan and South Korea were compared to the United States. The topic is a staple of Fox News coverage as of late, with several hosts, including Carlson berating cities run by Democrats for a perceived rise in homelessness.
“It’s a phenomenon that started two years ago,” Trump told Carlson, commenting on cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles’ “major problem” with “filth.”
“It’s disgraceful. I’m going to maybe—I am looking at it very seriously,” he said. “You can’t have what’s happening—where police officers are getting sick just by walking the beat. I mean, they’re getting actually very sick, where people are getting sick, where the people living there are living in hell, too.”
Trump then blamed the “liberal establishment” for homelessness and argued it was “inappropriate” for world leaders to come to Washington, D.C. and have to see homeless people on the street.
“So we’re looking at it very seriously,” Trump added. “We may intercede. We may do something to get that whole thing cleaned up. It’s inappropriate.”
