President Trump will finally nominate someone — the U.S. ambassador to Canada — to fill the ambassador to the United Nations position left vacant by former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) months ago, Politico reported.
Kelly Knight Craft will reportedly be nominated next week, but will likely face a tough Senate confirmation because of her scarce foreign policy experience and her family’s business interests. Some Senate Democrats have already vowed not to be easy on her.
“She got a fairly easy pass because she was nominated to Canada,” Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) told Politico. “That’s not the type of pass she’ll get for this nomination,” calling the ambassadorship one of the “most senior diplomatic positions we have.”
But Craft also has some friends in high places, at least among Republicans, like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and half of those on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who have enjoyed donations from Craft and her husband Joe Craft for years.
