President Donald Trump had some advice for America’s first President, befuddled by George Washington’s decision not to name Mount Vernon after himself.
“If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it,” Trump said during a tour with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte last April. “You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.”
According to Politico, tour guide Doug Bradburn pointed out that Washington did snag the U.S. capital. Trump laughed and acknowledged the good point.
Bradburn reportedly later said that the Macrons knew much more about American history than Trump did, and that he struggled to maintain the American President’s interest for the 45-minute tour.
Trump only had eyes for the real estate part of the tour, critiquing the small rooms and narrow staircases. He concluded that he could’ve built the place better and for cheaper.
However, per Politico, he was pleased with the bed where Washington died from a throat infection: “a good bed to die in,” Trump said approvingly.
