President Donald Trump predictably got behind Attorney General William Barr’s characterization of intelligence agencies’ activities as “spying” during the Trump campaign, saying Thursday that it’s “absolutely true.”

“I think what he said was absolutely true that there was absolutely spying into my campaign — I’ll go a step further, in my opinion it was illegal spying, unprecedented spying, something that should never be allowed to happen in our country again,” Trump said. “I think his answer was a very accurate one and a lot of people understand the situation.”

Trump has long been on the “spygate” train, taking any “evidence” — even a slip of the tongue — to be proof that government officials were trying to undermine his candidacy. Security officials have held that the intelligence activities were trying to detect Russian meddling in the election, not to target the Trump campaign.
