President Donald Trump said Wednesday morning that he does not want to release his tax returns while he is under an audit and argued that Americans don’t actually care whether they see them.

Now, I will say this, I would love to give them, but I’m not going to do it while I’m under audit. It’s very simple,” he said. “Remember, I got elected last time. The same exact issue with the same intensity, which wasn’t very much because, frankly, the people don’t care.”

Trump has used his claim that he is under audit as an excuse not to release his taxes in the past. But his returns are again in focus as the administration determines whether it will comply with House Democrats request for the documents.

Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin told lawmakers on Tuesday that he would “comply with the law,” but added, “I have not made a comment one way or another whether we will supply the tax returns.”
