President Donald Trump clearly reacted to the backlash to his border closing threat Thursday, saying that he’d give Mexico a year to stem the flow of immigrants and drugs into the United States before closing the border and levying tariffs on car imports.

Part of the reason Trump backed off his border closure threat is the reaction from the business community, as losing trade with Mexico would be detrimental to a whole host of U.S. businesses. In the same vein, levying tariffs on car imports would likely devastate the U.S. auto industry.
