President Donald Trump has discussed with Vice President Mike Pence, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) and RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel the possibility of backing a primary challenge to Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) as a warning to any other Republicans who consider turning on him.
According to Politico, some of Trump’s aides are skeptical that Amash will even run again. The congressman removed himself from the Freedom Caucus this week, of which he was a founder, saying that he didn’t want to become a “distraction” for the group.
Trump also has his sights set on Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX), who has been a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration policies, and on Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who supported legislation to protect special counsel Robert Mueller and initially opposed the emergency declaration.
