Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) kept it blunt when she spoke on Monday night about the GOP’s outrage over her Holocaust comment.

NBC’s “Late Night” host Seth Meyers asked Tlaib about the controversy, and she lamented that it was “unfortunate” how President Donald Trump, House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) had twisted her words.

Tlaib told Meyers, “I got a text message from a friend who’s like ‘Hey, next time, you know, really clarify. Maybe talk like a fourth-grader because maybe the racist idiots will understand you better.'”

The congresswoman explained again that the “calming feeling” she mentioned in regard to the Holocaust was about the pride she felt for her Palestinian ancestors’ sacrifice in giving Jews a safe haven after World War 2. She added that she wanted modern-day Palestinians to find “light” in that fact, despite the oppression they face.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) defended Tlaib on Monday, saying that Republicans owe her an apology for distorting her words.
