A Moscow-based American businessman with enduring ties to President Trump has piqued the interest of the Senate Intelligence Committee, CNN reported Thursday.
According to witnesses who were recently interviewed by committee staffers, investigators have been curious about David Geovanis for a few months. During interviews with the committee last year, witnesses were asked about Trump’s dealings with Geovanis, a business relationship that has reportedly been in the works since the 1990s, according to CNN’s sources.
Witnesses think Senate investigators’ interest in Geovanis is two-fold. It signals the committee — which is probing 2016 election interference — wants to know about Trump’s business dealings in the 1990s and could also help shed light on whether Russia has embarrassing, damaging information on Trump.
Geovanis also worked with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, whose ties to Paul Manafort have been of interest to numerous investigations surrounding Russian interference.
