Sen. David Perdue’s (R-GA) campaign announced on Thursday that the lawmaker would be going under quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19 as his runoff election on January 5 draws ever closer.

“This morning, Senator Perdue was notified that he came into close contact with someone on the campaign who tested positive for COVID-19,” the campaign said in a statement. “Both Senator Perdue and his wife tested negative today, but following his doctor’s recommendations and in accordance with CDC guidelines, they will quarantine.”

The senator was tested “regularly” for the virus, according to the campaign, and “the team will continue to follow CDC guidelines.”

Perdue is currently fighting to keep his seat from Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff in one of Georgia’s two Senate runoff races on Tuesday that will decide which party will control the chamber next year. Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) will face off against Democrat Raphael Warnock.
