Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) will be going into quarantine after one of his staffers tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, the senator’s office announced.
“Senator Alexander has no symptoms and tested negative for COVID-19 on Thursday afternoon, May 7,” David Cleary, Alexander’s chief of staff, said in a statement on Sunday. “After discussing this with the Senate’s attending physician, Senator Alexander, out of an abundance of caution, has decided not to return to Washington, D.C., and will self-quarantine in Tennessee for 14 days.”
Cleary stated that the Tennessee Republican, who heads the Senate Committee on Well being, Schooling, Labor and Pensions, will be working from home.
White House coronavirus task force official Dr. Anthony Fauci, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Dr. Robert Redfield, and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner Stephen Hahn are slated to appear in a hearing with Lamar’s committee on Tuesday. They too began self-quarantining this weekend after each of them were exposed to people with COVID-19 and will be calling in to testify in front of the committee.
