Both of New York’s U.S. senators called for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) resignation on Friday, citing the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct levied against him in recent weeks.
“Due to the multiple, credible sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, it is clear that Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners and the people of New York,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) wrote. “Governor Cuomo should resign.”
The resignation call follows similar calls from the majority of New York Democrats in the House of Representatives.
Cuomo was defiant Friday during a press briefing, denying the allegations against him and saying that politicians calling for his ouster were basing those calls on “opinions.”
The governor said he would cooperate with two probes into his behavior, one from the New York State Assembly’s Judiciary Committee and another from two lawyers appointed by New York’s attorney general.
