Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) on Tuesday threw his support behind a floor vote on President Trump’s nominee to fill the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat.
Romney’s announcement signals that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has enough votes to proceed with his controversial move to consider Trump’s Supreme Court pick just weeks ahead of the November presidential election. The Utah senator’s support of a floor vote comes on the heels of two more key GOP senators, Sens. Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), backing a vote.
In a statement released Tuesday, Romney said that his decision is “based on the immutable fairness of following the law, which in this case is the Constitution and precedent” and that if the nominee reaches the Senate floor, he “intend(s) to vote based upon their qualifications.”
