Rep. Marie Newman (D-IL) on Wednesday said she installed a trans pride flag outside her office that sits across Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) after the GOP lawmaker called the LGBTQ+ rights bill known as the Equality Act “an attack on God’s creation.”
Earlier this week, Greene delivered remarks on the House floor attacking the Equality Act, which bans discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity nationwide in employment, housing and public accommodations.
Greene, who co-sponsored legislation that would prohibit trans women and girls from women and girls’ athletic divisions, characterized the Equality Act as “a direct attack on God’s creation” that would lead “men who dress and think they are women” to think they “will have rights over all real girls and women.”
Newman took aim at Greene for the GOP lawmaker’s opposition to the Equality Act by putting up a trans pride flag that ensures Greene will “look at it every time she opens her door.”

About a half hour later, Greene hit back at Newman’s move by simply spewing more transphobic comments:

Earlier this month, the House voted to strip Greene of her committee assignments following her incendiary remarks that recently resurfaced, which include espousing unfounded claims centered on the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory and musing the execution of Democratic lawmakers. Greene has bragged about having former President Trump’s support even after her inflammatory remarks drew backlash, adding to growing concerns of QAnon’s influence in the Republican Party.
Newman was elected to the House in November after defeating then-Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) in the Democratic primary earlier last year. Lipinski had come under fire by progressives over his opposition to abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, in the Democratic primary earlier last year.
