President Donald Trump is considering nominating former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, Axios reported Thursday, citing two unnamed “senior administration officials familiar with the decision.”
Bloomberg confirmed, citing three unnamed people “familiar with the matter,” that Trump intends to nominate Cain to the the board.
Axios reported that Trump has “told confidants” that he wants Cain on the Fed, pending a background check.
The background check is no small step: Allegations of sexual harassment and assault against Cain surfaced during his unsuccessful bid for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
Cain ultimately suspended his campaign after the allegations but continuously denied wrongdoing. After the allegations surfaced, Cain added a “Women for Cain” section on his campaign website and included, among others, one supporters’ testimonial calling his accusers “pathetic husbandless women.”
The Wall Street Journal noted that Cain formed the relatively new super PAC “America Fighting Back,” which the paper reported has spent nearly $20,000 in pro-Trump ads this year.
