The White House’s former director of legislative affairs, Marc Short, will return to the Trump administration as Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff, The New York Times first reported Tuesday, citing an unnamed person familiar with the matter. Axios confirmed the report citing unnamed sources with direct knowledge.

Pence’s former chief of staff, the exceptionally swampy Nick Ayers, resigned at the end of last year after reportedly turning down an offer from the President to be White House chief of staff. Pence’s deputy chief of staff, Jarrod Agen, has been running things since Ayers left, Axios reported.

Short, the Times noted, served as Pence’s chief of staff when Pence was a congressman and during the 2016 Trump campaign. Short also has deep ties within the Koch brothers’ machine of political organizations.

After he resigned in July, Short was employed as an on-air commentator on CNN, a fellow at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center for Public Affairs — which prompted professor resignations from the center — and a consultant for private interests.
