Alex Cora, the manager of the Boston Red Sox, will not attend a ceremony at the White House on Thursday, citing President Trump administration’s response to Hurricane Maria’s devastation in Puerto Rico, the Associated Press reported.
“The government has done some things back home that are great, but we still have a long ways to go,” Cora, who is native to Puerto Rico, told the AP on Sunday. “That’s our reality. It’s pretty tough to go celebrate when we’re where we’re at. I’d rather not go and be consistent with everything.”
The team was invited to the White House on Thursday to celebrate the 2018 World Series champions.
