Democrats and Republicans on the House Intel and Judiciary Committees have been feverishly preparing for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s appearances next week, some holding full mock hearings with a Mueller-stand in to refine their questions.
According to CNN, lawmakers have been re-reading the report, as well as analyzing old hearing coverage to get comfortable with Mueller’s style. Aware that Mueller is unlikely to stray from the confines of his published findings, Democrats are trying to style their onslaught in a way that highlights President Donald Trump’s alleged obstruction in the most damning way possible.
Democrats on the two committees are also divvying up their angles of attack. Judiciary Democrats intend to focus on alleged obstruction episodes like Trump’s attempts to get Mueller fired, or his coercion of the special counsel’s witnesses. Their Intel counterparts will home in on WikiLeaks and Russia connections.
Republicans, on the other hand, are sure to frame their questioning along Trump’s preferred narrative that Mueller’s investigation was solely an attempt to undermine his election and presidency.
