A new Pew poll released on Wednesday found that 47% of white Republicans are bothered by hearing people speaking a foreign language.
The poll shows that among white Republican or those who lean Republican, 20 percent say hearing foreign languages bothers them “a lot,” while 27 percent say it bothers them “some.”
Only 26 percent say they’re “not at all” bothered. Among Democrats, the number rises to 58 percent.
Pew’s findings reflect the GOP’s growing anti-immigrant sentiment that’s been amplified by President Donald Trump and his crusade against both illegal and legal immigration. Trump often leads chants of “build the wall” at his rallies, and there was a notable moment at a 2018 Michigan rally when the crowd booed after Trump asked if there any Hispanics present.
Pew surveyed 6,637 American adults online from January 22 through February 5 this year, with a 1.7 percent margin of error.
