Vice President Mike Pence publicly slammed conservative Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts on Wednesday over his unexpected (and pivotal) role in dealing right-wingers several defeats in key court battles.
“We have great respect for the institution of the Supreme Court of the United States, but Chief Justice John Roberts has been a disappointment to conservatives, whether it be the Obamacare decision, or whether it be a spate of recent decisions all the way to Calvary Chapel,” Pence said during an interview on Christian Broadcast.
The vice president asserted that Roberts’ decisions are a “reminder” of “just how important this election is for the future of the Supreme Court.”
“We remember the issue back in 2016, which I believe loomed large in voters’ decisions between Hillary Clinton and the man who would become the president of the United States,” Pence said. “And some people thought it wouldn’t be as big an issue these days, but I think that’s all changed.”
Last month’s Supreme Court decisions saw Robert side with the court’s four liberal justices in several blockbuster cases that, by a 5-4 majority, blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, preserved the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and struck down Louisiana’s restriction on abortion.
