House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Monday a new move toward getting to the bottom of the violent insurrection at the Capitol that ex-President Donald Trump incited on January 6.
Pelosi cited in her announcement the evidence presented at Trump’s Senate impeachment trial, which ended with his acquittal on Saturday, and Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré’s review of the Capitol’s security measures.
“It is clear from [Honoré’s] findings and from the impeachment trial that we must get to the truth of how this happened,” the Democratic leader said.
“To protect our security, our security, our security, our next step will be to establish an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission” to investigate the siege, she continued.
House investigators are currently probing the lead-up to the siege and the security failures that allowed the mob of Trump’s followers to breach the Capitol. Acting Chief of Capitol Police Yogananda Pittman and several other senior officials at the agency have testified in front of the House Appropriations Committee.
