Former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos doesn’t blame President Trump or his associates for characterizing him as a “coffee boy” and a “low level volunteer” after he was indicted for lying to the FBI about his contacts with an overseas professor who claimed to have information about Hillary Clinton.
During and interview with CNN on Wednesday, Papadopoulos said he was “laughing” when he saw President Trump’s tweet calling him a “liar” and a “low level volunteer.”
“The way my status of offense was written, I probably would’ve distanced myself even more from a former associate and probably said something even worse, but now with the new information we have and we actually can read that status of offense with new eyes and with new details, we can understand that that wasn’t as bad as it seemed at the time,” he told CNN’s John Berman. “But at the time too when you’re talking about hacked emails, the niece of Vladimir Putin and mysterious professors, you probably would want to distance yourself from that person as well.”
“You’re a forgiving person,” Berman said.

After serving his 14-day prison sentence for lying to the FBI, Papadopoulos has thrust himself back into the news for alleging in his new book, “Deep State Target,” that he never actually lied to the FBI, even though he pleaded guilty to the charge. He claims he was “duped” by FBI agents and that he voluntarily handed over the information he had from the professor: that the Russians were in possession of Clinton’s emails.
Papadopoulos also revealed on Tuesday that his lawyers have requested Trump grant him a pardon.
