After vowing to solve the nuclear problem in North Korea, President Trump may settle for a compromise to keep regime leader Kim Jong Un from swelling his nuclear arsenal, the New York Times reported.
The move wouldn’t shrink North Korea’s missile program, but would at least halt the production of new nuclear weapons. While administration official claim the goal is still complete denuclearization, the move would essentially mean the U.S. recognizes North Korea as a nuclear power, according to the Times.
The U.S. State Department’s North Korea representative told the Times on Sunday that any suggestion about such a move was “pure speculation” and that the U.S. did not have any “new proposal currently” to offer North Korea.
Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to cross over into the demilitarized zone onto North Korean soil on Sunday.
