The New York Times published several videos on Wednesday morning showing new footage of two rioters’ alleged assault on Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died the day after the attack, during the pro-Trump insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
One of the videos establishes where Sicknick was standing on Capitol grounds when one of the rioters, Julian Elie Khater, allegedly sprayed the officer in the face with a chemical irritant allegedly provided by another rioter named George Pierre Tanios. Both of them were arrested last week and have been charged with assaulting Sicknick.
Federal officials have not filed charges related to Sicknick’s death. Investigators have not disclosed the exact cause of Sicknick’s death. Unnamed sources told various news outlets that the officer had been bludgeoned by a fire extinguisher, but the authorities have not confirmed that account. On the night of Sicknick’s death, the Capitol Police said he was “injured while physically engaging with protesters,” then “returned to his division office and collapsed.”
“He was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” the police department said at the time said.
Khater and Tanios have not been charged with Sicknick’s death.
A third video published by the Times shows Khater telling Tanios “Gimme me that bear shit” while reaching into his bag, to which Tanios says “Hold on, hold on, not yet, not yet, it’s still early.”
“They just fucking sprayed me,” Khater responds.
Khater is seen hanging around the area where Sicknick is stationed behind the bike rack barricades in the fourth video.
A fifth video shows Khater raising a spray can above the crowd, then a stream of the spray flying toward Sicknick, who turns away after being hit with it, as the crowd tries to break through the barriers.
The officer’s reaction is shown in the next video. Sicknick crouches over and rubs at his face while holding a water bottle, possibly using it to wash off the spray.
