New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) removed the National Guard troops President Trump ordered deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border in her state because she saw the move as unnecessary.

“I was on the border and I’m looking and assessing whether or not there’s a real emergency or crisis and there isn’t,” she told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “And the reality is that these troops need to be available when there is a serious issue or an emergency to deal with.”

While it is not surprising that the Democratic governor would oppose Trump’s border efforts, the Trump administration has tried to sell the necessity of their border wall on a perceived threat or “emergency” at the border. After Congress passed a spending bill that only supplied a fraction of his desired wall funds, Trump declared a national emergency at the border so he could secure the remainder of his funding.
