Per KGTV, ABC’s San Diego affiliate, at least four victims have been transported to the hospital. So far, one person, an older woman, died there, per CNN.
President Donald Trump addressed the shooting later on Saturday: “At this moment it looks like a hate crime. Hard to believe,” he told reporters.
Mayor Steve Vaus said that the attack was thought to be a hate crime due to statements the shooter made upon entering the synagogue. He called the man in custody a person with “hate in their heart.”
The synagogue was hosting its Passover dinner celebration when the attack occurred.
The shooting comes less than a year after 11 people were gunned down at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
