Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) submitted a criminal referral for former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen, alleging possible foreign lobbying violations.
“I ask unanimous consent that my letter referring Mr. Cohen for violating FARA for illegal lobbying activity be entered into the record,” Meadows said at a House Oversight Committee hearing where Cohen was testifying.
“Without objection,” committee Chair Elijah Cummings (D-MD) replied.
Meadows pushed further. He then asked that the House Oversight Committee “look in a bipartisan way … at criminal referrals at the next business meetings.”
Cummings then declined, saying “there are objections.”
Meadows’ referral came after a line of questioning over Cohen’s dealings with a bank from the central Asian country of Kazakhstan.
During the questioning, Cohen said that he was paid by Kazakh BTA Bank to recover funds in the United States.
