Whitaker, who also served as ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ chief of staff, was a source of controversy for the Department due to the perception that he was elevated to his former boss’s position by President Trump to serve as a Trump loyalist.
Attorney General Bill Barr took over the role after his Senate confirmation last month. Whitaker was serving in another position at the Department before his reported departure.
