A New York federal judge on Wednesday granted former Trump fixer Michael Cohen a two-month delay for when he must report to prison.
Cohen was set to turn himself in to the authorities on March 6, but U.S. District Judge William Pauley III agreed to allow Cohen an additional 60 days. Cohen’s new reporting date is May 6.
The former personal lawyer to President Trump requested the extension in order to undergo “intensive post-surgical physical therapy” related to his recent shoulder surgery, and to address the pending interview requests from three congressional committees.
Per the letter, Cohen will need “substantial time” to prepare for his upcoming congressional testimony. He recently made a successful request to postpone his scheduled closed-door testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee because of “post-surgery medical needs.”
Cohen is set to serve three years in prison for a variety of financial crimes, including making hush money payments to women on Trump’s behalf. Cohen’s attorneys said they provided a “fulsome letter to the Court” on Feb. 12 under seal explaining the requested delay.
