Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin largely tried to avoid questioning on the internal IRS memo published by the Washington Post, saying Wednesday morning that he does “not believe” that the document contradicts his own statements on President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
During an appearance before the House Financial Services Committee, he told Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) that he hadn’t had time to review the memo in full yet, which concludes that Trump must either release his returns or invoke executive privilege. Mnuchin has said that Congress must provide a legislative reason to get the returns.
When Wexton pointed out the discrepancy between those two conclusions, Mnuchin waved her off.
“I actually don’t believe that,” there is a contradiction, he said.
