Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows joined Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Wednesday in slamming the second impeachment trial of former President Trump by dismissing the gravity of the deadly insurrection at the Capitol earlier this month that Trump incited.
It’s only been three weeks to the day since the violence at the Capitol, but Republicans are happy to brush it aside as they continue to kowtow to Trump.
Appearing on “Fox and Friends” Wednesday morning, Meadows complained about the upcoming impeachment trial while deploying the GOP’s laughable call for “unity” after pushing Trump’s unfounded claims of widespread election fraud for months.
Asked whether Trump’s speech at a rally that happened hours before the Capitol riots — when the former president told his supporters to “fight like hell” as he repeated false claims of a “stolen” election — was a good idea, Meadows conveniently dodged the question.
“When we start looking at the rally, we are focused more on that than we are really we need to be focused on today,” Meadows said. “When we start to look at America, it needs to be about what is important to people on Main Street. ”
Meadows went back to complaining that the Senate impeachment trial is a waste of time after trying to paint Trump as a populist president who “put America first.”
“As we start to look at that as we are going forward, hopefully we will get beyond this,” Meadows said, before going onto refer to all but five Republican senators joining Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) in voting the day before to declare that the Senate trial was unconstitutional. “Let’s get on and be focused on what’s important to the American people.”
Meadows’ dismissal of Trump’s incitement of the deadly insurrection of the Capitol that left five dead as well as the former president’s second impeachment trial comes a day after he parroted Paul by calling the trial “dead on arrival.”
If today’s Senate vote is any sign, the Democrats’ ridiculous impeachment of former President Trump will fail—again—by a long shot. Dead on arrival.

On Wednesday, the Conservative Partnership Institute, a group run by former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint that serves as a networking platform for conservatives, announced that Meadows joined the organization.
