Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan dispatched his chief of staff on Friday to warn the White House to stop politicizing the military, according to a Monday Associated Press report.
The message follows an incident where someone at the White House — President Donald Trump claims ignorance — asked for a warship named for McCain and his family to be hidden from view during Trump’s trip to Japan.
Shanahan also reportedly talked to Cindy McCain, the late senator’s wife, over the weekend.
Trump has seemed less perturbed by the incident, gleefully unloading his dislike of the senator’s memory.
