Voters in Colorado and Washington state passed measures in Tuesday’s election to legalize recreational marijuana use, but a similar measure in Oregon was defeated.
The Associated Press and Reuters reported that Colorado and Washington will now tax and regulate marijuana use for people 21 and older. Washington, which saw 55 percent support and 44 percent opposed, will offer state licenses to grow the plant and allow adults to buy up to an ounce at a time. Colorado, which saw 53 percent support and 47 percent opposed, will allow individuals to own up to an ounce and grow up to six plants in a private setting.
The AP and CNN projected on Wednesday morning that Oregon’s Measure 80 would lose. The measure would have been the most far-reaching of the three, allowing limitless personal cultivation of the plant in addition to similar tax-and-regulate legislation.
