Jon Stewart opened Monday night’s episode of “The Daily Show” by lampooning the Obama administration’s attempt to send Secretary of State John Kerry to Paris for a “charm offensive,” after criticism that U.S. officials were absent at a gathering of world leaders in France last week.
“Now I know what you’re thinking,” the host began, “is it a good idea to send a man appears to be a lovechild of Andrew Jackson and a wooden cigar store Indian on a ‘charm offensive?”’
After a few news clips assured Kerry’s “frenchiness,” Stewart had more faith—until he saw the clip of Kerry pushing a hug on French President Francois Hollande, which the host slowed down for an awkward play-by-play analysis.
“That is not prom-worthy,” Stewart said.
But it was Kerry’s gesture of bringing folk-singer James Taylor to sing “You’ve Got A Friend” that broke Stewart’s patience.
“Are you trying to get us in a war?” the host asked with his head buried in his hands.
