Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has agreed to testify before the House’s special committee on Benghazi if asked, a Democratic congressman told CNN on Tuesday.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking member on the committee, said chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) had asked Cummings to check if Clinton would be willing to testify.

“She immediately said she would and that she wanted to come in December, but if December did not work, she would come in January,” Cummings said. “She said I’ll do it, period. The fact is she was very clear. She did not hesitate for one second.”

Asked to confirm Cummings’s statement, Clinton spokesman Nick Merril told TPM: “I’ll leave it to the committee to address their plans.”

Gowdy has signaled that the committee’s investigation could extend into 2016, leading many Democrats to view the probe as a political ploy to trip up Clinton’s presumed presidential candidacy.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), who has argued that the Benghazi attack that killed four Americans “precluded” Clinton from becoming president, has urged the committee to subpoena Clinton.
