While instructing American Jews to be insulted by comments from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), former Maine Gov. Paul LePage said something pretty offensive about American Jews himself.
“The Jewish people in America have been great supporters of the Democratic Party,” LePage told WGAN Monday, in an interview flagged by The Associated Press.
“In fact, that’s where their money comes from for the most part. They should be absolutely insulted for what she’s been saying.”
He added, referring to Jewish Democrats: “I think what they might do, the fundraising might get hurt a little bit, but I don’t think they’re going to desert the Democratic Party.”
Omar has made a handful of comments considered by some to be anti-Semitic, including one tweet asserting that American politicians’ support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins baby.” She later apologized and said the tweet was a reference to the influence of the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC.
