White House counselor Kellyanne Conway says she will appear to testify on behalf of the White House as part of the House’s impeachment inquiry under one condition: House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) must do the same.
Conway made the crack during a press gaggle with reporters inside the White House briefing room on Monday, calling Schiff a “fact witness” and suggesting the White House would comply with Democrats’ request for representation at its upcoming hearings if Schiff was asked to appear as a witness.
“They have to be more definitive about what they’re doing and they’re not definitive,” she said of the House’s ongoing inquiry. “First it’s the Judiciary Committee and then you’ve got Intel… Is Adam Schiff going to testify? Because he’s a fact witness. That would be great. I’ll tell you what, if Adam Schiff testifies, I’ll show up on behalf of the White House.”
Conway has had it out for Schiff for months, even before he became the face of the ongoing probe, and has largely seized on the Republican talking point that Schiff is in cahoots with the whistleblower, whose complaint formed the basis of what is now the impeachment inquiry over President Trump’s call with the Ukrainian president.
