U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta on Tuesday will consider the House Oversight Committee’s attempt to obtain President Donald Trump’s financial records, in what is likely to be a landmark decision in the mushrooming feud between Congress and the Trump administration.
Mehta is expected to issue a decision after an 11 A.M. hearing in Washington. TPM’s Tierney Sneed will be covering it.
According to the Washington Post, Mehta announced last week that he would decide the entire case after Tuesday’s hearing, not just whether to freeze the subpoena while the case proceeds. Trump’s lawyers filed objections to that shift on Monday and asked for the judge to make a final ruling at a later date. Mehta will hear their objections during Tuesday’s hearing, but it’s not clear whether he will delay his final ruling.
Team Trump says the subpoena is an abuse of congressional oversight; Democrats say that Trump is just trying to delay accountability with his court challenges.
