Special Election Star Jon Ossoff Is Back And Running For Senate

Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff arrives on stage to speak during his election night party being held at the Westin Atlanta Perimeter North Hotel after returns show him winning/losing the race for Georgia's 6th Congressional District on June 20, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Ossoff ran in a special election against his Republican challenger Karen Handel in a bid to replace Tom Price, who is now the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Jon Ossoff, the once-rising star who came within spitting distance of winning a special election for the heavily Republican sixth congressional district in Georgia, has set his sights on a new prize: Sen. David Perdue’s (R-GA) seat.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Ossoff intends to formally launch his campaign on Tuesday, joining three other Democrats who have already begun their campaigns. Ossoff already scooped up the endorsement of Rep. John Lewis (D-GA).

Ossoff rose to prominence in 2017 with his special election effort, a district that should have been a safe Republican hold but which ultimately cost $60 million as former Rep. Karen Handel (R-GA) pulled in proxies like President Donald Trump and then-Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI). Ossoff only lost by four points, and Lucy McBath snatched the seat in 2018.

Though Democrats have had little recent success winning statewide in Georgia, many are flocking to the two Senate opportunities, with Perdue up for reelection and Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) deciding to retire.
